The 4-H Rat Dissection offers hands-on learning that enhances and reinforces the concepts of biological form and function by using rats as models. Students will engage with the actual dissection of a rat while considering the anatomical features and functions of major organ systems and extrapolate that to human anatomy.
Nebraska's College and Career Ready Standards of Science Addressed:
- SC.HSP.6.1.B Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms
- SC.HSP.6.1.F Construct an explanation based on evidence that animals have structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction
- SC.HSP.6.2.A Communicate scientific information that explains the patterns of organization in the integumentary system
- SC.HSP.6.2.C Develop and use a model to identify and describe the relationship between the structures and physiological processes of the integumentary system.
- SC.HSP.6.2.F Develop and use a model to explain the relationship between the integumentary system and other body systems.
Class Type: In Person Only
Teaching Time: This is a one-visit class that lasts 1.5 hours.
Provided: Specimens, dissection equipment, and presentation.
Classroom Requirements: Computer and projector.
Fee for Rat Dissection: $250 per classroom (up to 30 students).
