Is your garden producing more vegetables and fruits than you can use. Looking for ways to extend the shelf life of your food? Trying to reduce food waste? Looking to provide greater food variety on your menus?  We provide the most reliable research-based information on canning, freezing and drying.

Pressure Canner Dial Gauge Testing

Accurate pressure is critical to safely canning low acid foods. If the temperature of the food within the canner is not high enough to kill harmful bacteria and microorganisms, your food may build up harmful toxins and can be deadly. Over time, a canner’s dial gauge can change and give a false reading. Nebraska Extension recommends testing your dial gauge yearly.

Free testing can be done in our Douglas-Sarpy County office. Contact Nancy (nurbanec1@unl.edu / 402-444-3668) or Cindy (cbrison2@unl.edu / 420-444-7872) to make an appointment. Gauges are tested while you wait, and usually take less than ten minutes.
