MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM
The Douglas/Sarpy County Master Gardener Program is a volunteer program of the University of Nebraska Extension. What can I do as a Master Gardener?
Master Gardeners volunteer their time in a variety of approved activities: maintenance of public demonstration gardens, writing for the Master Gardener newsletter, presentations to civic and gardening clubs, answering questions on the garden helpline and staffing “Ask the Master Gardener” booths at community events.
How do I become a Master Gardener?
In order to apply to the Master Gardener Internship program, individuals must attend a Master Gardener informational meeting, be accepted into the program and attend 50 hours of classroom instruction. Full recognition as a Master Gardener is granted after completion of 40 hours of volunteer service. Master Gardeners must re-certify annually.
Who can participate?
Any adult (18 years and older), can apply. Previous gardening experience is helpful, but not required.
What is the selection process?
Upon attending an informational meeting, those interested can fill out an application. Applicants are then interviewed and twentyfive are selected annually to intern in the Master Gardener program.
Is there a fee?
Yes. The initial education fee is $195 which includes all classes, handouts, a t-shirt and the Master Gardener Handbook. No one will be turned away from the program because of inability to pay.
When are classes?
Classes are usually held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for eight Fridays in February and March. There is also a diagnostic clinic in late May or early June.
