Living Safely With Lead Programs Available

Lead poisoning is one of the most serious health threats for young children up to six years old. Even small amounts of lead consumed regularly may cause learning and behavior problems. Childhood lead poisoning reduces IQ, which can never be regained.

Nearly 100 percent of Omaha homes east of 72nd Street were built before 1978 when lead was banned from paint. Recently, tests conducted in east Omaha areas revealed higher than allowable levels of lead in soils. An area in east Omaha has been designated an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Site.

Lead chips and dust from paint, and lead in soil are contributing to an alarming percentage of children in east Omaha testing positive for lead poisoning. While you may not be able to remove all of the lead in and around your home, you can learn to live safely with lead. The University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Douglas/Sarpy Counties is offering programs to help you learn to Live Safely With Lead.
