Lead poisoning is one of the most serious health threats for young children up to six years old. Even small amounts of lead consumed regularly may cause learning and behavior problems. Childhood lead poisoning reduces IQ, which can never be regained. Nearly 100 percent of Omaha homes east of 72nd
Street were built before 1978 when lead was banned from paint.
Recently, tests conducted in east Omaha areas revealed higher than
allowable levels of lead in soils. An area in east Omaha has been designated an Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Site.
