National Recognition for the "Living Safely With Lead" Educational
Programming
The Clean Homes...Healthy Families Program Award of Excellence recognizes
members of the National Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS)
for their innovative educational programs that help families and individuals
understand the link between clean homes and good health. The award, sponsored by
the Soap and Detergent Association, was presented to University of
Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in Douglas/Sarpy Counties at the NEAFCS annual
conference.
"Living Safely With Lead" classes were designed to reduce the risk of
childhood lead poisoning in Omaha. The two classes, "Living Safely With Lead:
Reducing the Risk" and "Living Safely With Lead: Maintenance of Older Homes,"
were developed by local Extension educators with expertise in three key areas.
Sharon Skipton, who specializes in healthy homes, teaches the importance of
appropriate housekeeping practices in reducing the risk of lead poisoning. John
Fech, a horticulture specialist, addresses how to protect children from
lead-contaminated soil through landscaping techniques. Carrie Schneider-Miller,
a registered dietician, offers instruction on how to protect children through
good nutrition. Classes are offered in Spanish and English.
In addition, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension in Douglas/Sarpy
Counties was recognized as a central region finalist in the Extension Housing
Outreach Award competition for its "Living Safely With Lead" programming.
