Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste
Steve Tonn, Extension Educator – Omaha Metro Area Lakes

Did you find some old paint, outdated lawn chemicals, old cleaning products, defective car batteries, or other household hazardous waste items when you were cleaning out your garage, basement or workshop? Looking for a way to safely dispose of them? The Douglas/Sarpy Counties Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility is the place. The Collection Facility can accept most products that are labeled with any of the following words: Caution, Warning, Danger, Poison, Flammable, Volatile, Caustic or Corrosive. For items that can’t be accepted the Facility can offer alternative solutions. The Collection Facility takes items on an appointment basis only. Call 444-7465 to make an appointment. The Facility is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is free to Douglas and Sarpy County residents. The Collection Facility also has a Swap Shop for recycling and reusing paint, cleaning materials, pesticides and other items.

For more information on types of items accepted and how to prepare the items for disposal call 444-7465 or visit the web site www.underthesink.org.
