Steve Tonn, Douglas/Sarpy Counties Extension Educator

Douglas and Sarpy County residents now have the opportunity to dispose of household hazardous waste in a safe and convenient manner and at no cost. The Douglas/Sarpy Counties Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, 4001 South 120th Street is now open to receive household hazardous waste. Household hazardous waste includes leftover adhesives, paint thinner, paint stripper, pool chemicals, herbicides, rat poisons, lawn chemicals, wood and metal cleaners, old gas, oven cleaners, lighter fluids, insecticides , paint and adhesive solvents, antifreeze, batteries, used oil and oil filters and more.

The Collection Facility will also have a “Swap Shop” that will offer usable products that have been dropped off at the facility. A variety of household cleaners, garden products, automotive products, paints, stains and varnishes, and hobby supplies will generally be available. Types and quantities of products will vary.

Household hazardous waste products brought to the Collection Facility should be kept in their original containers. If it is not in its original container it should be labeled. Never mix two household chemicals in the same container. Check lids and tops to prevent leaks and spills. During transportation, place the containers in a lined box to prevent leaks and spills.
