Psoids (Booklice)

Psoids
by Dennis M. Ferraro Extension Educator Douglas/Sarpy Extension Unit

The proper name of this insect is "psoids." They are small, almost invisible to the naked eye, and fairly common. Booklice prefer warm, damp, undisturbed conditions, and feed mainly on microscopic molds. They are commonly found in old magazines and books, where they also feed on binding glue. When disturbed, these insects may leave the books. They can cause skin irritation to some people.
Mold-inhibiting sprays and cleaning solutions give the best control of booklice. Providing good air flow helps prevent infestations.
