Webbing Clothes Moths
by Dennis Ferraro Extension Educator Douglas/Sarpy Extension Unit
This pest isn't extremely common, but is occasionally found in
homes. The adult or moth stage has golden wings and rose-colored
hairs on its head. It is about ½ inch long.
The webbing clothes moth is most frequently sighted in its juvenile
stage, an off-white or cream-colored worm about ½ inch in length.
The insect may remain in this larval stage for more than two years.
The larvae make silken tunnels and webs in fabrics. They feed in
random patches.
Webbing clothes moths attach any natural fiber. Articles containing
such fibers should be stored in insect-proof bags and checked
frequently. Regular vacuuming and brushing of garments will help
prevent damage, as will laundering and professional dry cleaning.
Cold storage is also very effective. Mothballs and cedar-lined
chests or closets cannot be relied on to prevent moth infestation.
Many insecticides will cause stains on fabrics and should be
avoided.
